  1. Hello, I build a Ply-by-Ply composite model using solid elements (CHEXA). Referring to this PDF from Altair Advanced_Laminate_Composite_Modeling.pdf I think Altair calls this technique "multiple solid layer modeling". Part of my model is attached to this post. FYI, the steps I did to build the model are the following: 1. First I meshed a midsurface, using Quad4-elements (CQUAD4) only. I assigned the normal-direction. Then I assigned the material-orientation of all elements along the x-axis. From the mid-surface a build the ply-by-play shell model. To assign the different orientation of each ply I used the PCOMPP card. In the shell model I was able to visually review each the fiber-direction of each ply. 2. In the second step I converted the shell model to a ply-ply solid model (Aerospace -> Composites -> Shell To Solid Conversion). Each ply is now a separate component. And all the elements are now form the typ Hex8 (CHEXA). I have assigned a separate PCOMPLS card to each ply. For each ply, I have adjusted the thickness in the PCOMPLS card. And I think in the PCOMPLS card i have to assign the fiber orientation using the THETA. My questions: 1) On the last slide in this PDF from Altair Advanced_Laminate_Composite_Modeling.pdf, it is explained how to set the coordinate system for solid-elements. But I don't really understand the steps. Can you explain them step by step? Maybe on my model, which is attached to this topic. 2) How can I review the fiber-direction of my solid-plies or the solid-element itself? See my pictures, i found many options but don't know which one to use for solids. 2) How adjust the normal-direction and fiber-direction of solid elements? I found many options to view coordinate systems, but none shows the correct orientation, for example for a +/-45° ply (colored red). I saw related posts on this topic, but without any solution. So I kindly ask you to give detailed instructions. Thanks a lot! Related topics:
  2. I would like to ask the question again. I'm using Hypermesh 2017.2 and Optistruct as solver. Is it now possible to get failure result for 3D composites, modeled with MAT9ORT and PCOMPLS (= each ply as a solid)?
  3. Hello, I’ve the task to build a ply-based solid composite model. The tricky part is, I have to build the model out of plies, which are drawn in Catia Shape Design (see picture 1). Why do I want to model each layer as a solid (ply-based solid composite model)? First reason, the composite part is used in a load introduction area. From the literature, a solid design is recommended. Second reason, I want to make use of Altair MultiScale Designer (MSD). In Optistruct only solid elements are currently supported with user materials. Therefore I use MAT9ORT as material. In the last step I replace the material information with an user defined material (woven 5 harness satin), which I get from the MultiScale Designer (MSD). Why is the composite part drawn in Catia Shape Design? Since the design of the composite part is complex at many points, Catia Composite Design (CPD) couldn’t be used for that. Instead the whole composite part is drawn in Catia Shape Design. Each layer (=ply) is drawn individually. So the geometrical informations I get from the CAD model are correct. But I have to work with this model and cannot rebuild it in CPD. What I've tried so far: I loaded each layer into Hypermesh and meshed the components (automesh, quads only). Then I created the materials (MAT9ORT), the plies (PLY01, ...), a laminat stacking and properties. Last I would do a shell to solid conversion. (see picture 2) Problems and questions: The layers don’t know each other. So the mesh of each layer is different. (see picture 3) Moreover in the thickness direction of the plies, they are not really connected. (see picture 3) Can you help me to find a strategy to build up the laminate out of the shapes I have from Catia? Since I’m an unexperianced HM user, I kindly ask you to explain your help and instructions in detail. Thanks a lot! My software: Hypermesh 2017.2 OptiStruct as Solver Multiscale Desinger 3.4 for the user material Catia V5
