  1. Hi, I am doing a heat transfer analysis (transient) with OptiStruct and I want to apply a distribution of temperatures to a solid face. I usually use TLOAD1 cards as DLOAD in the loadstep, and SPCD in the EXCITEID field of the TLOAD card. I know how to apply SPCD constraints when the temperature is the same for all nodes of the face, but I have a .txt file with different temperature values of each node and I don't know how to proceed. What is the procedure to solve this problem? Thanks in advance!
  2. Hello everyone, i am doing linear static + modal analysis to be to AcuSolve for fsi simulation. Optistruct simulation details: riser pinned at two end (constrain at xyz translation, free xyx rotation) + upward force (top tension) define as load. The loadsteps in optistruct are: 1. Linear static: spc: defined load: defined 2. modal Analysis: spc: defined method (struct): defined statsub (preload): linear static I get an error during importing op2 file into acuconsole-eigenmode manager; "internal error: inconsistent number of eigenvalue. The error only occur when there are two subcase (linear static + modal analysis). If i only do modal analysis without linear static, i can import the op2 file without any error. Is there any way(s) i can exclude linear analysis in "output: op2 card"? Attached is the thread in AcuSolve forum with sim files. Thanks in advance!
  3. Hi everyone, I'm having trouble with a size optimization of a component I designed. The objective is to minimize the mass of the part while constraining the deformation at a single node to max 2 mm (+ and -). The result of the free-size optimization gave me a deformation of 1.6 mm and the size optimization always fails with an infeasible design. The program seems to delete all of the plies leaving it with only two, which are predefined by a constant constraint in the free-size design variable. I tested it with the ply sets altered for manufacturing and also tried it with the base sets, which I got from the free-size optimization. Neither works. Both fail after the 3rd iteration with the 2nd and 3rd one being seemingly the same. I have attached one of the .out-files. minmass_base_model.out
  4. I'd like to create a displacement response (also an optimisation constraint), which is measured at a point outside of my geometry. I tried to fix him to my geometry with an RBE2 element, but that made the RBE2 stretch and the point stayed where it was. I'd like the point to move by the same amount a / some nodes of my component move after applying a force. How can I achieve that?
  5. I set up a 2D topology optimization and mostly for faster computation I'd like Optistruct to only vary between the full thickness and 0 for each element. How can I implement that? And how do I get a usable CAD file out of the 2D result?
  6. Hello, My name is Benjamin, and I am currently using Optistruct for my masters thesis in the aviation sector. My work will incorporate a topology optimization with two materials, for which I am now trying to learn as much as possible about the software. This led me to the help section of Optistruct where I found the two tutorials: -OS-E: 0896 Multi-Material Topology Optimization of Automotive Cradle -OS-E: 0897 Multi-Material Topology Optimization of Automotive Chassis Unfortunately, as I understand it so far, the model files are not delivered with the student version of Hypermesh/Optistruct. Could you provide the files for me? If you can think of yay further resources for Multi Material Topology Optimization I would be very thankful! A big question I am asking myself right now would be if there is a possibility to define the interface between the two materials used, e.g. by a stress constrain which should account for an adhesive stress limit.   7. Hi I am performing a heat transfer simulation (steady state). The model consists of 2 plates joined together by a glue connector. One plate is heated up, the other one is at the ambient temperature. The problem I have is that when I look at the result, the RBE3 elements seem to act as insulators (see image below), the bottom surface is hooter that the upper surface, the blue region is the glue. I know it is possible to specify a thermal expansion coefficient for these elements but is it possible to specify a thermal conductivity value as well? Looking forward to your replies Toon

Hello everyone, Regarding some Shock's analysis demands, I've decided to facilitate and automate (using Activate) the task to obtain the expected Shock Response Spectrum curve as below: This model will be very useful for those who are intending to do some Shock's analysis, even a linear approximation using the amplification factor on a certain frequency, as a Response Spectrum covering all the frequency domain. Basically the inputs are the Half-sine and System properties: Sine: Magnitude, period, phase. System: Mass, damping, stiffness. After set them, you'll just have to click 'Run' and then 'Execute'. Besides the traditional plots (Acceleration (G) vs. Frequency (Hz)) you will already have the 'TABLED1.fem' to be used on OptiStruct, as can be seen in this video. Thanks for @robertavarela, @RoKet and @Adriano Koga for some tips regarding the modeling. Hope this be very useful for you all!   9. Hello, what does this error message means? *** WARNING # 4961 Reference stiffness underlying contact 1 is 9.860277e-11 times the average diagonal stiffness of the global model. I have TIE, SMALL friction and FINITE friction surface-to-surface contacts in my model. For all of them this error message appears after changing geometry and mesh. In the same model with a slight other geometry and before remeshing, these errors didn't appear. All i did was reassign the contact surfaces to the new mesh. Model Checker is a very useful tool embed in HyperMesh that performs a series of verifications in your model in order to catch most common errors even before submitting the model to run, as it may take some time to export it and then launch it. To Load the ‘Model Checker’: [HWx and HM Desktop] Ctrl+F >> ‘model checker’ [HM Desktop] Tools > Model Checker Once it is open, you can perform a check by right-mouse click (RMB) and click ‘Run’. Model Checker will verify your model considering the most common ERROR and WARNING scenario for your solver.

  12. Hello, i am performing a topographie optimization of a hat-shaped beam unter 3-point-bending with HyperMesh and Optistruct. My aime is to minimize the compliance beneath a certain value (objective minimize compliance, constraint compliance < 14000), without exceeding a certain mass (constraint m < 0,000553) In the optimization controls i have limited the maximum number of iterations to 100 and the convergenze criterion to 0,000001. When i start the optimization, optistruct only performs the inital analysis and one optimization-iteration. The compliance of this one and only optimization-iteration is lower then the inital compliance but higher then the desired compliance. Why does optistruct dont perform additional iterations?   14. Hello, i have a curved shell-geometry on which i like to reorient the nodal coordinate systems to follow the curvature. I only like to do that for the nodes on the edge. With that nodal systems i like to assign rotational boundary condition following the curvature of the shell-geometry. I am using OptiStruct for Solving. How do i proceed to achieve this goal? A minimum and maximum value are set during the DV definition as sown below: However, what value of the thickness does Optistruct choose as the initial guess value for the first iteration?
  17. Greetings, I am performing a free-size optimization (iteration summary given below) and trying to understand the explanation behind maximum constraint violation %. So far the following is clear: If constraint violation > 1% : status is V (violated) If constraint violation < 1% : status is A (Active) Large constraint violation % could mean that the constraint is too tight and that the problem itself is ill-defined. the difference between regular and soft convergence is understood as well Problem definition: The thickness of an insert is defined to be the DV. Two stress constraints are defined. The objective is a stress minmax formulation. Question: I am unable to figure out whether the large constraint violation % implies a critical issue.   18. Greetings, I have a FEM model whose mass calculated by Hypermesh (under Tools > masscalc) is equal to 2.22 kg I am running a free-size optimization of this model. From the design parameters summary reflected in the *.out file (shown below), the sum of design and non-design mass is equal to 2.51524 kg: After the iterations begin, the mass registered in iteration 0 is 2.34766 kg Question: Is it wrong to expect the following: FEM mass = (design + non-design mass) = mass at iteration 0? Why are these values different?
  19. Hi! I have performed free size optimization and it ran successfully. However I have some questions relating to some of the upper and lower limits and design variables required to enter. After checking the optimization book provided by altair I still do not completely understand in design variable in the parameter option the mindim is what exactly and how to choose it appropriately? As I have chosen different values and it shows different results. Moreover, I chose Volfrac as the optimization constraint and chose upper limit as 0.2 but I am not sure what this represents? As in volume option upper limit showed the volume in mm^3 but volfrac I am not sure what it represents. Another main question I have is that when setting load collectors I can add as many but in Loadstep for load and constraint theres only two options. How can I add two loads and one constraint for my analysis? Please let me know I know this is a long one but your help would be much appreciated.   21. We are practicing the C-shaped clip of the tutorial to learn Optistruct. The calculation itself with Optistruct is possible, but as shown in the figure, the "HyperView" button is displayed in white and cannot be selected, and the result file cannot be displayed. The software used is HyperWorks 2019 Student Edition. I would appreciate if someone could teach me a solution. Thank you.

  23. Hi I am doing some test calculations in optistruct. I have a very thin plate with basically no mechanical strength and stiffness, attached to a plate with moderate strength and stiffness. When I heat up both plates I get deformations due to thermal expansion which are expected. Now when I only heat up the very thin plate, the deformations due to thermal expansion are higher compared to the previous case (so also the thick plate now has higher deformations even if it is not thermally expanding). This made me wonder the following: is material stiffness is neglected in a thermal expansion analysis?
  24. Hi! I am not sure why but when I try to import my geometry from solidworks to optistruct it only shows as a single component geometry while in Ansys it shows as different parts. I want to know how can I have multiple components in optistruct? I am performing size optimization so I need to assign different properties and thickness to different parts of the model.   25. Hi all I want to calculate deformations in a solid due to thermal expansion. I calculated the temperature field in a CFD solver and now want to use this temperature field in Optistruct in a thermal expansion analysis. I have used the linear interpolation under BCs>Create>Temperatures but when I ran the simulation no displacements were calculated. I discovered that apparently the linear interpolation tool only works for shell elements (while I have a solid with solid elements obviously) so I think this has something to do with my problem. My question is: How would I import a temperature map to my thermal expansion simulation (with a solid) in Optistruct? Is there another way? Looking forward to your ideas Toon
