  1. Hi. I have Two cuboid blocks of different materials, one inside another. i.e. Outer block has a cuboid space at the center in which inner block is placed. See Here. http://i.imgur.com/zGuGj.png The outer surface of the inner block is in direct contact with the inner surface of outer block.Thermal expansion coefficient of the outer is very low. Where inner block has a significant thermal expansion coefficient. But outer block has large young modulus than the inner. And both the blocks have good thermal conductivity. A very high value constant heat flux(Burned in a furnace ) is applied at the outer surface of the outer block. Now I want to see the thermal and structural behavior of the inner block. And off-course the outer block. 1) Heat flux is applied at the outer surfaces of the outer block. This heat will be transferred to the inner surface of the block. Due to this flux, temperature of the outer block will increase but as it's thermal expansion coefficient is very low, it will not expand much and hence very low stresses. 2) The resulting heat flux at the inner surface of outer block will be transferred at the outer surface of the inner block. Due to this flux, temperature of the inner block will increase and as it's thermal expansion coefficient is high, it will try to expand but will be restrained by the outer block boundaries. This will apply force on the outer block and now stresses on the outer block will be very high. I have modeled this problem in HyperMesh. => Mesh: TetraMesh for both the blocks. =>Property: PSOLID for both the blocks. => Material Input (For both the materials): E, NU, RHO, TREF, A, K =>Created CHBDY Surface elements on the outer surface of the outer block. Interface 1: (Type: CONDUCTION) for the outer heatflux and the outer surface of the outer block. (As in tutorial RD-1080) => Created CHBDY Surface elements on the outer surface of the inner block. Interface 2: (Type: CONDUCTION) for the resulting heatflux at the inner surface of the outer block and the outer surface of the inner block. (As in tutorial RD-1080) => Created Two element sets for the elements of inner and outer blocks. Interface 3 : (Type: CONTACT) between SET of inner block and SET of outer block. => Applied heat flux load on the outer surface of the outer block. LoadCollector1 (Type: QBDY1) : Constant Value. => Created one LoadStep Loadstep 1 : (Type HEAT TRANSFER) and edited the SUBCASE to output Heat and Flux(As in tutorial RD-1080) => Radioss. It shows Analysis Completed. NO ERROR. =>HyperView: I get temperature and flux distribution on the outer block. But I didn't get temperature/flux distribution on the inner block nor I am able to see the displacement and structural behavior for any of the blocks. I should recall here that flux value is very high and in the results I see that flux at the inner surface of the outer block is significant so there should be some flux for the inner block. Please guide me. Also answer the following points. 1) Is there any mistake in my problem setup. 2) Do I need to put any other interface for the innerblock. 3) I gave value TREF in the material CARD MAT1. What does this mean. What I understand from TREF is reference temperature i.e. the initial temperature of both the material. That's why, I didn't give any separate temperature constraints. (But in tutorial RD 1080, some temperature constraints are applied. 4) Do I need to request any other output in Edit Subcase for the STRESS Distribution. If Yes then please Explain the required parameters.
  2. We, students of MNIT Jaipur are doing a project related to Thermal Stress in a plate enclosed with a mold of another material. We are using HypperMesh as a tool for analysis of the problem. We have gone through the tutorial "RD-1010: Thermal Stress Analysis of a Coffee Pot Lid" but it doesn't include thermal loading (How to apply temperature loading etc.). Can you please guide us for the same.
