  1. Hello, what does this error message means? *** WARNING # 4961 Reference stiffness underlying contact 1 is 9.860277e-11 times the average diagonal stiffness of the global model. I have TIE, SMALL friction and FINITE friction surface-to-surface contacts in my model. For all of them this error message appears after changing geometry and mesh. In the same model with a slight other geometry and before remeshing, these errors didn't appear. All i did was reassign the contact surfaces to the new mesh. Defining the contacts totaly new didn't helped. Tank you very much for your help! With kind regards Tim Winkler
  2. Dear all, As for now it is impossible to extract contact forces in implicit dynamic analysis using CONTF. However, FORCE/ELFORCE (elemental force) is still available. Is there a way to extract the temporal contact forces using FORCE on shell elements which may be in frictional contact some time during the analysis? Thank you, Amir
  3. Hi all, I have a question about using contact ties to attached weld elements to a structure. In a nutshell, I've been asked to bring 2 models together with a dissimilar mesh and weld them. In the attached image on the left is a typical merged node to node approach with no contact - this would be our traditional approach. The middle contour plot is the same model but the weld is detached from the structure and is connected via a tied contact. The right contour plot is with a dissimilar mesh (similar to what I have been tasked with) and using the same contact tie set up as the middle contour. As you can see there is some variation between all three contour plots. Ideally I want to be able to use the approach in the right plot as this would cut out significant amounts of remeshing. However I do need to justify this approach. 1. Why is there such a difference between plot results? 2. Has this approach been used by others and if so why? 3. Is the contact tie approach acceptable for this application? 4. Are there any published references which can be used to support this approach? Any help is always appreciated, I don't always get a notification when people reply so apologies if there is a delay. Kindest regards Andy
  4. Hi, I would simulate a hertian contact about two cylinders. I tried to create a smulation but I had some problem about the results and convergence. In particular I have problems about the contact type (SLIDE, STICK and FREEZE) and track. I attach the simulation that I created. Dear All, I try to do simple heat transfer simulation by following OS-1385. when I run the simulation I got Error 1000 message, I know that the CGAP material does not have material, but in the OS-1385, the CGAP also doesn't have material too.   7. Hi, I am a beginner about non linear simulation, I want simulate a contact about a gear transmission. In Altair tutorials I found this example:"OS-1520: Finite Sliding of Rack and Pinion Gear Model" that could help me. In the simulation, the motion is create by "enf_rotation" from a displacement of 5 radians. The load step hasn't Load declared and the rack is free to move on x. Now I have three questions: -What differece is between SPC and SPCD? If I used SPCD for "enf_rotation" would I get a different result? -Why there are contact stress in results? (There aren't forces or torque, the rack is free to slide) -If I want evalue the contact stress about a gear trasmition with a motion torque on pinion and a resistence torque on gear wheel, is this hypermesh's tutorial a good way?   8. Hi, I need help with this model. I would like to perform a non-linear analysis on a composite specimen. It's a sandwich panel with honeycomb core, modeled as mat9 ort with two plies of carbon fiber per side. The main issue is the contact between the punch and the panel, the same as the one with supports. I'm not able to model them correctly. I've thought to use the contact slide but the results does not have sense. I have compared this with real test and the reaction force on the punch is more than 12 times bigger than reality. Looking at the results plot, It's clear that contacts behavior is not acceptable. Can you please help me? I attach here the .hm file. Thank you!
  9. Hello everyone, I am trying to perform non linear quasi static analysis on the truss problem shown in figure. The constraint is applied on bottom side and compression load is applied on top surface. I am using hyperworks 2019 version optistruct as a solver. Due to compression load, various ligament come into contact with each other and get penetrated. I want to create contact on internal surface of the structure to prevent it. I tried some options but didn't work. I will be really grateful for your kind help. Note: all the element are 3d brick element created by "solid map-line drag".   10. Hi everyone, I have problem obtaining the TCL command of auto contact pair finding. My model contains 6 components, I use the Abaqus contact manager to automatically find contact pairs for me. Manually, I can successfully find contact pairs. Since I want to run this process automatically by TCL script, I do the process manually and check out the code added in the command.cmf file. Unfortunately, the code are very long, approximately 50000 lines. Also, the code are about nodes' data and surface set, which is not I am looking for. I am looking for the command that represents the buttons "auto", "components: all", "find", "create". I will show these buttons in the figures attached. By the way, the file: raw.hm is my model. Again, my goal is to get the TCL code for finding contact pairs. Please help me, thanks! raw.hm

Hi all, I would like your opinion for a quassi static analysis I am performing that includes 3d contact between a rectangular plate with a bolt hole fitted, a bushing that will be inserted with an interference fit into the plate's bolt hole and an external load. I am thinking to perform the analysis in two steps: First, calculate the stresses from the interference fit of the bushing (no external load). Second (continued from the first step) apply the external load (can be a force, or a pressure load). The question is: what kind of boundary condition will be applied on the bushing during the second step to "lock" it in place to ensure that the bushing will not move in the vertical plane or exhibit a rotation of some kind? Do we need to apply any BC to the bushing? Thank you for advance for your assistance.
  12. Hello everyone, I would like to learn the duty of "clearance" in PCONT card. In Hypermesh help it says: "Prescribed initial gap opening between master and slave, irrespective of the actual distance between the nodes."; but that does not explain anything for me. Could anybody tell me in a detailed way, what happens when i use clearance section in PCONT card for contacts. Thanks in advance.

  15. Hi, I've a problem with my 3PB model of a sandwich structure (honeycomb core). Contact between sandwich structure and supports isn't realistic. I set contact in "SLIDE" but the result is wrong. So I obtained a displacement of 177 mm with a force of about 15000N, not real. I can't also view the results of CFAILURE, but I've set it in output requests. Can you take a look to my model?   16. Hi everybody, I was running a test with optistruct using two simple cubes. They are both fixed at opposite ends. Their faces are separated by 0.1 mm and can, if pushed, become engaged in a contact (type SLIDE). Type of analysis: nonlinear quasistatic. Issue: Even if I fixed both cubes at their bases and there is no applied force and no contact is engaged (shcdist=0.001 and the solver warns me that no contact elements have been defined during the analysis), the cubes translate of 2 mm as if they are moving like rigid bodies. I have already tried to constrain some more nodes, to no avail. Any explanation for this thing by anyone? Thank you in advance. Find attached my .fem file to check SHRCTOL001.fem
  17. Hi all, 1、For a problem with large deformation, the contact status between two objects will change. Some location will come into contact while some other location will separate. What's more, relative sliding may also exist. How to choose the proper parameter values in contact property card for this problem? 2、If a linear static analysis is chosen, could the contact status change during deformation process? Roy
  18. Hi all, I was running a model in Optistruct 13.0 dealing with a two step non linear quasi-static analysis of two plates coming into contact. In the first step my goal is to make sure the two plates don't come into contact; let's say my initial gap is 5 mm, one plate is pushed down by a force of 100 N, the other one is fixed at the base. At the end of this step the two plates should have minimum gap between them, in other words no load should be transferred from one to another. After the second step in which I apply a force of 1000 N, the two plates obviously come into contact, resulting in a load transfer to the spcf applied at the base of the fixed plate, since friction between the plates is activated. I tried using a gap element in order to simulate the problem but no matter how I change the values into the pgap card (for example I first put a value of Kb equal to 25 N/mm to make sure the pushed plate didn't reach 5 mm of displacement with a force of 100 N.... didn't work, then I put it equal to 0 and I obtained the same result ), at the end of the first step the gap of 5 mm is always reached, resulting in load transfer. How can I avoid this situation in order to make it work properly? I'll attach the .hm file so you can check it. Thanks for any replies, hope someone will help me with this matter! model_with_gap.hm

  21. Hello, 1. I try to simulate a high detailed model of a screw with OptiStruct. Currently the screw will be pretensioned with the pretension function and in the next LoadStep it will be rotated. Now in the following LoadSteps i want to add enforced displacements on the Contact Surface of the screw head. My main problem is the sequence with the enforced displacements. How can every single Loadstep use the results of the previous Loadstep (Stress, Displacement, Contact...)? For the pretension Loadstep i use the function STATSUB(PRETENS), but i dont know if the displacements will be freezed for the next Loadstep and i use CNTNLSUB to consider the contact. 2. The next poblem is, how can i enable/disable contacts between severally LoadSteps without using MODCHG (Older Version of OptiStruct than 14.210)? Thanks!

Dear All, @Prakash Pagadala in attached image green- housing yellow - shaft blue- ball ball makes a contact with shaft at 2 points and with housing at 2 points. at every contact there is an interference of 3 microns. housing is fixed and shaft is allowed to translate axially. i tried contact with static coefficient of friction and and clearance value but still groove surface of shaft and housing is penetrating the ball and vice versa. can anyone suggest how can i work on this??

(damping material density is 1856.07kg/m^3) The blue line is contact surface(freeze) model, The black line is composite model. why the blue line is more big value than black line abouy twice. why the blue line is more big value than black line.
