  1. Hello all, I need to perform a Thermal Analysis on a Satellite. In order to do it so simulating the space thermal environment is needed. My question is: How can I simulate the space thermal environment in Hypermesh using MCS NASTRAN, to take into account the specific orbit and time of the year. Thanks in advance, Best Regards
  2. Hello, I want to make a thermal simulation of a cooling plate in hyperworks with the AcuSolve Solver. The geometry would be this: Where an aluminium cooling plate (the grey solid) is in contact with a water flow (blue volume). The problem is that I can't get a mesh with coincident nodes between both volumes, taking into acount that for the AcuSolve simulation I need two surfaces in the interface between the solid and the liquid volume. Do you have any solution for it? Thanks in advance.

  4. Hello, I want to make a thermal simulation with the solver acusolve in hypermesh. In this simulation i hahave a control volume (water) that flows through a a cold plate i n contact with multiple solids with a heat source. The problem is that when I make the mesh in hypermesh it does not make coincident nodes between txo different volumes, as it does in acuconsole. What should I define te make the nodes in the shared surfaces between different volumes coincident? Thank you

Dear All, I'm using HM as a pre-processor and optistuct as a solver. want to simulate following condition shaft of size =10.000 mm and housing = 9.999 mm(interference of 1 micron) when i'm trying to rotate shaft using motor by keeping fixed housing. 150 degree temp is generated. want to observe the effect of temp on contact pressure and deformation of housing ID and Shaft OD. model is setup is done as per NLQS. what extra i need to incorporate to observe above effect regards, Ganesh
  6. Hi Everybody, I am trying to simulate the residual strain on different ply's of a laminate due to different rates of cooldown. I was planning to do this with a heat transfer analysis (transient) but I believe that composites are not supported in transient heat transfer. Is it possible to perform a sort of transient analysis applying a Delt Tº in the different time frame? I was thinking to do this with TLOAD1 with excited a TEMPD and a Table1 Is this approach correct? Thank you beforehand
  7. Hello, I am trying to figure out how to model the heat generation on a brake rotor during braking using Optistruct. Are there any guides that describe this process or something similar to this? How would you approach this? The total energy of the system is known and will be evenly distributed over three brake rotors to stop the vehicle in a given time. Now, I need to model the maximum temperature reached.
  8. Hello, I am working on a project to simulate the cooling phase in an enamelling process. I simply generated a composite cantilever beam with two different materials to obtain the stresses and displacements during cooling process. I will cool down the composite cantilever beam from an elevated temperature to room temperature. The problem is, I am new to thermal boundary conditions and I can't find the correct load collector combination to handle the problem. To summarize the simulation; 1. Structure is at 350 degrees celcius and it will cool down to 20 degrees celcius. 2. Due to thermal expansion coefficent difference, the composite beam will deform. Thanks in advance!   9. Hello, i have a little question about the possibility of time scaling and the use of the radiation load collector. I used the factor 10 (1sec in simulation=10sec in real time) to speed up my thermal analysis with radioss. It works fine wenn i scale thermal conductivity and the heat transfer coefficent (for example convection) by the factor i used for speed up (10). Is this although possible for the radiation? Because i don't see any way to scale this value in correct way... With best regards Kintsch
  10. Hello guys, I am undergoing master in university right now and my title of my research is "OPTIMISING THE COMFORT IN MOTORCYCLE HELMET BY THERMAL/MOISTURE MAPPING". It is all about the effect of temperature inside the motorcycle helmet during riding a bike. Therefore, it is related to CFD which will effect the thermal energy inside/outside the helmet. The question is, how should I approach this type of case study using HyperWorks? I would be great if you guys attach some of tutorials. - example of vented motorcycle helmet image attached () plus I tried this tutorial (http://training.altairuniversity.com/analysis/thermal/projects/thermal-analysis-heat-transfer/) using HyperWorks version 13 but I stuck with assigning "Conductivity" Tutorials () Mine () Thanks.   12. Has anybody applied temperature to an optimization? Does this affect the optimization in any way, or are you supposed to just use it to see a temperature profile when you analyze a structurally optimized part?
  13. Hello! I'm triyng to do a thermal/estructure analysis. I Would to know how the program works with the changing on Young's Modulus, because of the increase of temperature on material. By tutorials, I set up MAT 1 and turn on MAT 4, to thermal properties. But, don't have any relation between the shape of Young's modulus and temperature. Thanks in advance!

I know how to define an output block to get the internal strain energy per unit volume within HyperWorks, and how to define custom objective function equations using the dequation button, but can't seem to call the internal strain energy, since I can't figure out how to define it as a response in HyperMesh. Is this feature supported in HyperMesh?
  15. Hi All Trying to run an Optistruct analysis to see how two layers of different materials will displace when experiencing a thermal load. In my case I have chosen points along a lattic where the temperature would be 80degC. But when running my model in Optistruct and in trying to view the results, the model cannot show a viable solution or a solution that makes sense, in fact, I have not setup the pre processing properly (it seems) which has lead to a model with massive deformation. Also I am unable to view the contours. The attached picture shows circled areas (red) where I have made equivalence nodes, there is an expected connection at these points (not defined).   16. Hi All, I have a question involving the HyperMesh preprocessor. I'm trying to run a transient thermal analysis, where there is a consistent base boundary condition, and convection is applied, but only after a delay. I'm having a hard time figuring out how to apply convection partway through the analysis. For example, I'm allowing the part to heat for 25 seconds, and then turning a fan on and blowing on it for the last 25. I have my TLOAD1, TABLED1, SPCD, and SPC collectors for convection, but I can't figure out how to apply this delay. I tried setting the TABLED1 value to 0 for the first 25 seconds, but that just sets temperature to zero I believe. I imagine the DELAY_OPTION would be helpful, but I don't know how. Thanks very much for any help you can provide.

Submitted by Anders89 on Tue, 05/04/2010 - 03:23 I wanted to pass along the results of my work with simulating the thermal system for a large CCD camera we are building - this is a dynamic model of the heat flow using cascaded elements, in effect a 1 dimensional slice through the camera assuming it is symmetric about the center (not strictly true, but good enough for the model). Surprisingly, the real data agrees with the model quite well, to ~10% - much better than I'd hoped given the approximations. The differences are probably unmodeled radiative effects in the internal elements - its hard to know the real surface emissivities, and there isn't really a lot of good data on material characteristics at these temperatures. I attach the model and a spreadsheet that contains data and renderings of the camera. The cooling is provided by 2-stage variable-speed helium cryo-pumps, I've put in curves for 2 speeds, might get around to doing an interpolation table to look at controlling the temperature by varying the pump speed but that isn't the operating plan at the moment.   19. Hello, I have a plastic part subjected to heated air and I want to simulate the thermal expansion (no CFD required, just a simplified thermal expansion with temperature inputs is sufficient). I am using HyperMesh for pre and post processing and my solver is Abaqus. I have no idea how to do this, already tried the Joule heating solver, static solver, explicit solver, etc always get some errors which has no meaning intuitively. Can anybody tell me how to go ahead with this? If there is a tutorial or a pdf on this topic what would be very helpful.

  21. Hello, i am doing the Optistruct tutorial OS1090 and can't find "heat_transfer_fin.fem" file neither in Hyperworks installation folder nor via Altair connect. I tried by my self but when it comes to select nodes via ID and there is no picture showing the nodes position i am stuck. Please sb. help me finding the tutorials base-files. Regards, Björn
  22. Hello, I have been trying to understand and adapt the Radioss Thermal Example (RD-5300), in order to make it represent the stress relief procedure. Alternatively, as the time of operation is relatively short, one might think of it as a welding process, with a lot of heat input into the material and generating large temperature gradients. I have been using HW2017.2. The assumptions are as follows: 1. The "weld" along a square trajectory is subject to a high thermal load from the "Source". 2. The "Source" has a constant temperature of 1300 K, and transfers heat through Inter/Type7 to the plate. The coefficient of exchange is high (1000 units), in order to provide a lot of heat in limited time. 3. The heat transfer is based on the actual temperatures of both components (i.e. Ithe=1). 4. The convection heat transfer coefficient is arbitrarily chosen as 1.0, and the ambient temperature is set to 298 K. 5. The initial temperature of the plate is 298 K, i.e. it is the room temperature. Now, the results are puzzling. I particular, I obtain some negative temperatures on the contour plot, and there are temperature "waves"/"oscillations" on the model. I suppose it is associated with the thermal stability conditions and the mesh sizing, but - RADIOSS does not generate any warning - I guess the Help system has some gaps in the relevant topic, and I am not able to figure out how to correct the model. In particular, /DT/THERM, according to the Help page seems to require no parameters, whereas I suppose it should work like /DT or /DT/NODA. I find as well the /THERMAL topic very limited, and I do not know how to properly use the time scaling for thermal material data - In particular, I do not now to interpret the time stability limit. Should the time chosen be smaller than the one calculated from the formula, or rather larger? - In the help system, I could not find hints on correct meshing for a thermal transient problem - I was not able to find a means of making Radioss (or HyperMesh, or HyperView) estimate and present the local values of thermal stable time step, and the time step chosen for the simulation seems to be derivced from the standard "mechanical" Courant condition.
