  1. Hey guys, I got a question on topology optimization again. I want to set a Stress Constraint for my optimization, how can I estimate a reasonable value for this constraint to avoid getting an infeasible design? Besides, how do I know which of my constraints is hurt when this error is occurring? Kind regards Simon
  2. Hey guys, I have a question on the theory of the SIMP Method used in OptiStruct to perform a Topology Optimization. I got that the stiffness matrix of a material is varied depending on its "density" and that using the penalization factor p, we are aiming for design with only 0 and 1 values in the end. For me it's still unclear, how OptiStruct is calculating these density values. How does the solver know where I have an element with density 0, 1 or something in between?   5. Hello Guys, I want to reanalyse my results from a topology optimization. As the part has thick walls, I don`t want to calculate with a surface-mesh. Is it possible to do a reanalysis with solid-mesh? (If yes - how?) Thank you Cheers
  6. Hello, I would like to generate my own shapefiles to be used with OSSmooth to create new topologies. Is there any information on how the file is constructed? I understand that the beginning of the file has element ids with their associated relative densities but there are many other fields whose contents are unknown to me. Thank you in advance, -Eric
  7. Hello, I have a problem using Inspire. I am doing a topology optimization of an upright. The problem is that the structure which the solver outputs to me is not connected to all of my non design space. The bearing at the bottom of this picture needs to be connected to both of the cylinders but is only connected to the top one. I alrady tried to separate the bearing (1 constraint and the other 2 contraints) but that does not make any sence at all. I also saw a picture, where it worked with nearly the same connectors.   8. Dear friends, I'm looking for a mechanical structure which can applied combine method of topology and size/shape optimization. In many references, the common is truss/beam structure, which can use good for academic research. I mean that the structure highly practical for manufacturing, especially for additive manufacturing.   10. Hello, how can I see the convergence criteria in optistruct output file? Is there any control card to set that.? Also I am running a topology optimisation of the wheel disc. I have taken a static analysis and I have a load case where there is a load acting in only one direction. In the analysis I have the max stresses in the applied direction only, ie at only one ventilation hole edge. So while moving to optimisation how can I set this stress distribution throughout 360 degree of the disc? Can I use extrusion constraint and define a node path in a circular direction? I already used it but wanted to make sure if this is the right way. Thanks, Punith Guptha
  11. Hello everybody, I have the problem that want to combined three load cases for one topology optimization, two linear static and one nlgeom implicit static. I try to optimized only linear static that have results to many iteration but when I combined nlgeom loadcase together, results shown only 3 outer loop as not same only linear optimization. How to recommend about nlgeom optimization?
  12. I'm doing an optimization where I put the response as DRESP1 massfrac. In dconstraints, selected lower bound = 0,6 and upper bound = 0,7 and the following error appears in the solver: *** ERROR # 2150 *** Invalid Volume or Mass Constraint. The response type is the total MASSFRAC the upper bound value = 7.000000E-01 the total volume = 1.805255E+05 the design volume = 1.660834E+04 the total mass = 1.426151E-03 the design mass = 1.312059E-04 The design material fraction (percent) should be at least 3 times the DOPTPRM MINDENS (default 0.01) Solver FAILED optistruct:: Solver run finished. Could anyone help me? Thanks

  14. Hello, Optistruct stores all iterations of optimization as standard. It is possible to determine what is stored? For example, if i would like to save only the initial, first and last iteration of the topology iteration. Thank you
  15. Rahul, thanks for the answer. I have increased the no of iterations to 150. Now it converged, but the result is still very bad. The displacement is -1.5e4 in the convergence graph. I dont know whats wrong... Could you please check my model? I attached it in my first post. Thanks for your help, wan
  16. Hi, i have done a simple Topo. Unfortunately, the result is poor. no convergence. -objective function: minimize mass -constraints: static displacement x < 0,5 static displacement y < 1 -mindim: 15 important to me is to achieve the displacement constraints as closely as possible. But look at the screenshots, something is wrong. But where is the error? Thanks for your help, wan arm.fem arm.out

I know how to define an output block to get the internal strain energy per unit volume within HyperWorks, and how to define custom objective function equations using the dequation button, but can't seem to call the internal strain energy, since I can't figure out how to define it as a response in HyperMesh. Is this feature supported in HyperMesh?

  19. hello, I need your help to solve a problem on linear buckling topology optimization I am doing topology optimization for linear buckling case of simply supported I-section beam (slenderness ratio-120) having compressive axial load. Beam is made up of shell elements. I have given base thickness 3mm and my design space thickness 6mm. I have considered two cases I-case Objective- minimization of compliance Constraints- buckling and volume fraction (0.4) problem- Infeasible design , I am getting negative buckling eigenvalues and it violates my buckling constraints (lower bound=1). ( direction of my load cannot be reversed). I am applying load which are having magnitude below buckling load factor. II- case objective –minmax –objref-(minimizing the maximum buckling eigenvalue) constraints- volume fraction. Problem- In second case I am getting positive eigen value but my volume fraction become so less in 4th and 5th iterations (10^-2) .therefore I am not getting any topology Also I have applied Topology optimization with minimum member size and 2-plane symmetry constraints in both cases. i am attaching *.out file. Results are not satisfying , could you please help me out. II-case.out I case.out
  20. I'm getting this error: A fatal error has occurred during computations: *** ERROR # 312 *** In static load case 1 the compliance is negative or large 1.33184e+018. Optimization/buckling analysis cannot be performed. due to possible rigid body mode. INFEASIBLE DESIGN (AT LEAST ONE CONSTRAINT VIOLATED). I'm thinking is a problem of units, but I have controlled very carefully all units. I've used: tonne, mm, N, Nmm, MPa in all steps.   21. Hi Everyone, I've been using Optistruct topology optimization for a project I'm working on and I am satisfied with the results of the optimization. I'm now trying to make a CAD model of the part to simplify the geometry and make it more practical (adding surfaces for bolts to sit on and getting rid of the rough surface created by the mesh and OSSmooth). I'm using Solidworks as my CAD tool and can't seem to find anything about the most efficient ways of doing this. Does anybody have any advice? Thanks!
  22. I am doing linear static structural optimization (topology optimization) of a plastic injection mold. I have the temperature of surfaces of my geometry. I used them as thermal load. Can I combine structural optimization with thermal analysis? Does Optistruct combine the displacement due to pressure applied to the model with thermal expansion? 1: I created a load collector with card image of load to combine my pressure load and thermal load is that correct? I also have gravity. I entered 3 for the LOAD_Num_set. because I wanted to combine pressure, gravity and thermal load. Is that right? For the loadsteps: type of analysis is linear static. I have checked SPC and selected constraint. I checked Load and I selected the load that I created which is combination of gravity pressure and temperature. Do I need to check TEMP and select my thermal load? 2: My second approach is this I created a load collector with card image of load to combine my pressure and gravity. I entered 2 for the LOAD_Num_set. and I combined gravity and pressure. For the loadsteps: type of analysis is linear static. I have checked SPC and selected constraint. I checked Load and I selected the load that I created which is combination of gravity and pressure. I checked TEMP and I selected thermal load. I was wondering which one is right, 1 or 2?   23. Hello, I am pretty new to Hyperworks but have worked myself through most of the tutorials. Until now, everything had pretty much worked out for me, but it’s the topology optimization, which is slowing me down at the moment. What I’m trying to do is to conduct two topology optimizations on a gear wheel, one where the wheel is driven by a moment in the center, and a second, where it is driven by a normal force on a tooth. The first had worked pretty well. I’ve reduced the gear wheel to only one tooth (virtually like a pie slice), set up a normal force on the flank and constrained the whole thing via a RBE3 and a CBAR element (6 DOFs). I then completely constrained every single node in a local system to simulate a symmetry constraint (which I’m not sure about being the right way of a symmetry constraint). Now I’m stuck with the second optimization. I want to add a second constraint, constraining the gear wheel at a second tooth, almost on the opposite side of the tooth with the normal force. The rotational DOF in the center shall be enabled. Is it possible to add a symmetry constraint for this problem? Or would there be another way to optimize the gear wheel? I hope I’ve explained it comprehensively enough. Thank you in advance for your help. Regards martonno
  24. Hello, I am trying to do a topology optimization on an automotive part for fatigue damage. The process I am following is Define the fatigue damage as response using the fatigue loadstep created. Define design constraint as damagevariable<1. Create a response for volume fraction. Define objective function as min volume fraction. Create a topology optimization desvar with damage less than 1 in parameter section. It however gives an error : Fatigue responses are applied to property 688188 which belongs to a topology or free-size domain. For fatigue-constrained topology or free-size optimization, please use the FATIGUE option on the design variable definition card. If someone is aware of the problem please help me.
  25. Hi! I'm currently trying to show OptiStruct's capabilities regarding manufacturing constraints for a thesis. Unfortunately, activating the "draw direction"-subfeature "stamp" results in trivial solutions (see attachment) that either fail or stop after 80 iterations. I already tried expanding the load cases and tuning the volumefraction constraint. I don't want to misrepresent the feature, but in most of the tutorials this one feature has been left out. The only example I found is in the attachments. Is there any more information describing the tool's way of working and recommendations for the optimization setup? Or is it a "work in progress"-feature like MAXIMUM MEMBER SIZE is? I also added my own project as a .hm. Thanks in advance and sincerely Yussef Bassti Grundmodell_Einspannung.hm
