  1. I set up a 2D topology optimization and mostly for faster computation I'd like Optistruct to only vary between the full thickness and 0 for each element. How can I implement that? And how do I get a usable CAD file out of the 2D result?
  2. Hello, I am running a topology optimisation using Optistruct. I am trying to look at the key structural members of an aerospace component. I am attempting to use a low volume fraction of ~3-6%. When the volume fraction is particularly low does this effect the solver's ability to converge? Thank you in advance
  3. Hello, can you tell me? I am not getting the complete result of my topology optimization. I wanna do topology optimization of the differential case of differential gear box. My FEA analysis is fine but optimization results are showing only in blue and red region form in element density. and how to compare of our final result from our original model that how much material we can or did remove from the model?

Hello, While solving a topology optimization file, I get the following error mesage: A fatal error has been detected during input processing: *** See next message about line 409 from file: D:/Optimization - Weight Reduction/Final/101/s101-5.fem "SURF 3ELFACE" Syntax error(s) found in bulk data 'SURF' card. Unable to understand what does it say? How to resolve this?
  5. hello all I am defining optimisation to reduce erp by topology optimisation. My objective is to find optimum material distribution to have low erp my defination goes as dconstraint: Erp: upper bound > (Target values) #### Volumefrac= upperbound 0.3 design volume objective= minimize design volume Loadstep = Modal frequency Response. ###For this setup I get error selected subcase not compatible with type of response while setting constraint on ERP how do i set the erp as target value.   6. Hello, I'd like to know if there's a way to conclude/cut-off an on-going iteration before it reaches the subcase termination time? I'm running a geometric non-linear explicit dynamic subcase. I want to base this iteration cut-off criteria once the rigid wall reaction force reaches a specific value...This should speed-up my topology optimization considerably... If not then, is there a way to define a constrain on the rigidwall reaction force ? I'm referring to the reaction force that we read from the "T01" file... Thanks !!
  7. Hello, this is my first post. I am working on a theoretical problem. Lets say I have some design space for a bracket and I know the geometric locations of the interface connections, like bolt holes or something similar. Optimization Goal: Minimize reaction forces at interfaces due to load Constraints: Volfrac = <1.0 So I created a design variable with an equation for the total reaction force. Its a sum of the reaction forces at each bolt hole and is shown below. To get the bolt hole forces, i did the following. The bolt holes have RBE2 elements connected to springs that are fixed on the opposite end. For each spring there is a total displacement optimization response (the xi values below) for the unfixed end of the springs. I'm using the known stiffness of the springs and the displacement responses to calculate the forces in the springs. (F=K*d) Im currently trying to get this to work for one loadstep, but I was wondering... What if I want to do a series of loadsteps, and weight them like a WCOMP response. Is there a way with the dequation or some other card to do a weighted set of loadcases and minimize the reaction forces like I have described above? If I have orthoganal loads, the optimization solution will be very different for each loadstep. Thanks, Clint
  8. Hello, I have tried running a topology optimization on a simply supported beam. I defined the objective as min. mass but did not introduce any stress or deformation constraints. And the optimization gave results. Is it possible to run a topology optimization without constraints? Then based on which parameter the software optimizes the structure, does it automatically introduce constraints by itself? Thank you, Muge Candogan
  9. Hi, I am new to Hyperworks. I am getting Error 2148 "All the sensitivities of response 2(objective) are zero. Also: 1)I put a pressure across each element on the circles as I want a distributed load of 150N on each circle. Is this correct? 2)In reality my beam is welded on each end.   10. Hi there, I wanted to know if it's possible to define thickness steps when performing topology optimization using Optistruct. For example assume there is a body of PSHELL elements, Initial thickness is 10 and base thickness is 2.5 and between these two values only 6 is permissible. Or in another case only 8.5 and 2.5 are possible for final part. How can I go with this kind of problems? The real problem is to decrease some deflections of sheet metal parts by adding welded patches so thickness in different regions can not be any value. For example if initial thickness is 2.5 mm then I want to improve strength by only welding some 6 mm thickness patches to it so optimization output must be only 2.5 and 8.5 mm thickness. Please let me know if my question is not clear. Thanks in advance.
  11. Hi, First time using HyperMesh and I am following a tutorial for topology optimisation. The tutorial I am following is on pages 25-36 in the link provided. When I click OptiStruct, I do not get a message. When I click view.out, I get a message saying: '.out file does not exist.' Where am I going wrong? OptiStruct_11.0_Tutorials_(1).pdf Regards, Laurence

  13. Hi I am trying to clean up the geometry of a particular solid. When I import the model from solid works to ABAQUS i get an error showing imprecise geometry and hence I'm unable to mesh it. I am therefore trying to clean up the geometry in hypermesh but im unable to detect any imprecise geometry as all edges show green. Can someone tell me how I should proceed in identifying and correcting the geometry Thanks

  15. Hello! Is there a way to see what is the exact volume of the topology optimized model? There is the option with Tool > masscalc, but there it shows only the volume of the origin model without the toplogy optimized geometry. Please correct me if I am wrong. Can it be seen in the .OUT file or in the .H3D file? Would it be possible to plot the volume as a function of the iteration steps? Thank you in advance for your help!
  16. Hello, I am trying to use the optimization techniques in Inspire to model a tower which is subjected to a compressive load at the top. Every time I run the optimization for maximizing stiffness in the program, the final results in the design space are always vertical columns. Is there a way to specify some buckling constraints in the model? Thanks!
  17. Hello, I am trying to run optistruct from the command line in MATLAB. I have been able to run it using the line; system('"C:\Program Files\Altair\2017\hwsolvers\common\tcl\tcl8.5.9\win64\bin\wish85t_os.exe" "C:\Program Files\Altair\2017\hwsolvers\scripts\hwsolver.tcl" -solver OS -icon "C:\Users\e-tru\Documents\beam_maker_altair_44.fem"') But I also want to be able to output the element densities and .sh file after an optimization and have been unable to do so. I have tried invoking optistuct.bat to see if that would help me and used the line; system('"C:\\Program Files\\Altair\\2017\\hwsolvers\\scripts\\optistruct.bat" "C:\Users\e-tru\Documents\beam_maker_altair_44.fem"') Unfortunately it did not work and the following error was generated; ERROR in hwsolver script execution: couldn't write file "beam_maker_altair_44.err_39816.out": permission denied *************************************** What does this mean? How can the .sh file and densities .dens file be generated by calling the optistruct in the command prompt (in MATLAB)? My operating system is Windows 10, Hypermesh version 2017 and MATLAB R2017b.   18. Hello, I would like to do some lattice optimization in Hypermesh. However, I need to know if it is possible to have a different mesh size for the lattice sections compared to the solid sections. The way I understand lattice optimization in Altair is that the element size you mesh with originally will determine the average length of the lattice struts. For example; I tetra mesh my model with a size of 2, the lattice beams have an average length of 2. However, I would like to have a mesh size of 0.5 with lattice elements of length 2 (or vice versa). My game plan is to run a minimize compliance with volume fraction on my model with a penalization of 1.8 (low porosity). Then use the results of the compliance optimization to split my part into sections for a given element density threshold. I should end up with solids for the lattice elements and solids for the non-lattice elements. The lattice solid sections will then be filled with lattice beam elements from another lattice topology optimization. I want to remesh each solid individually for different lattice strut sizes and types. Contact surfaces will then be used to connect the solids together and then run the Lattice optimization. The end goal is to use mesh refinement on the non lattice sections to check the validity of my model as well as experiment with different lattice sizes. Any advice is greatly appreciated. -Eric

  20. Hi, So while reviewing the result of topology optimization in hyperview we have two different pages showing design history (densities) and the subcase result (displacement and stresses). How can i plot the contour value of stresses or displacement while at the same time showing the iso-value of densities (optimized shape)? Thanks! bayupu
  21. Hi, I was using the lattice optimisation tutorial in order to complete a lattice optimisation on my own component and it completed the first step no problem, producing the "_lattice.fem" file. However, when I then ran that through OptiStruct, I got the following error: *** ERROR # 1814 *** MASSFRAC response on DRESP1 card 2 is not applied to a topology or free-size domain.   23. Hello all, I exported a topology result using OSSmooth as an IGES file and it is freaking big (67Mb!).. My student copy of Inventor Pro 2013 cannot handle the file size and keeps hangs with the slightest action (even rotating the model!)..(Iv got a decent laptop config so that not an issue - Dell XPS L502X 8GB RAM i7-2670QM @2.2 GHz) Can someone help me how I can export a smaller, easier to handle .iges file that Inventor will be happy with?   24. Hi, The problem consists of a connecting rod submitted to axial loads which define the phases of admission (traction) and combustion (compression). I am trying to run the following optimization: 2 load steps : linear static (traction) linear static (compression) 2 responses : Volume Compliance 1 constraint : 60% Volume 1 objective : minimize compliance Without combining the two load steps, I managed to run the optimization. I couldn't find a way integrating the two load steps for the optimization. I found that the only time that I can include the load step is when I define the objective. However only one load step can be selected. Therefore I was wondering if there is a way to integrate both of the load steps mentioned earlier. Thank you !
