Contact between 2 gears in optistruct

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I would like to model contact between 2 gears (like image in attached file).

I took this illustration in a Altair document dealing with contact problems. But, the author do not mention how to implement this kind of contact in optistruct.

Does anyone have any idea/advice on how to do this in optistruct?

Thanks for your help.

Hi Gaye,

You need to have quadratic contact to simulate gears in contact. Why not use RADIOSS instead of OptiStruct?

I think there is an example available in RADIOSS. also read more about quadratic contact (I think contact type 16/17)

Hi Prakash,

thanks for your useful answer and advice.

I use optistruct because i would like to perform also Optimization. And as i think, Optimisation is not possible in Radioss ! Is not it ?

Optimization is possible through RADIOSS. This is added in 13.0.

Use the optimization keywords to incorporate optimization in RADIOSS. Go through RADIOSS user guide/Reference guide.

Thanks.. Can you please give me the link to RADIOSS 13.0 user guide/Reference guide, i am not able to get it via altair web site.

Thanks.

Is there an example to show how the quadratic contact in RADIOSS will produce gear tooth root stresses that agree with AGMA calculations?

The examples in RADIOSS show that contact can be made but when the .rad files are imported, the TYPE 16 interface needs to be created after creating thick shells on the free ends of the rigid.

Fundamentally, can I skin over BRIC20 elements with 16 node thick shells and define the contact as TYPE 16?

Hi,

Currently there are no example files in RADIOSS with respect to AGMA calculations.

But please refer this paper http://www.altairatc.com/india/previous-events/2012/papers-2012/rl-10_optimization_of_design_based_on_tip_radius_sigma.pdf and also the attached document (Topology_Gear) which are cases similar to your query.

Interface type 16 allows defining contact conditions between a group of nodes (slaves) and a curve surface of quadratic elements (master part). The master part may be made of 16-node thick shells or 20-node bricks.
