Factor of safety

Recommended Posts

Dear All,

How the factor of safety comes into account for the Impact or crash analysis ?

If it so accountable what is the standard value to be maintained for it???

Thanks

RAM

FoS makes the design a meanigful, usable structure. FoS can range from 1.2 to 10 depending on the mechanical component(s). For example an aircraft component's

FoS may range from 1.5, where as a rope may have 6 till 9.

I think crash safety norms were formed based on experince and experiments.

Hi,

Adding to the above, during crash or impact we expect large deformations resulting in plasticity behaviour of the material. Thus the stress is higher than yield and as per conventional FOS formula it comes to be less than one. However during such scenarios, it is important to understand that the structure collapse does not cause any injury to the passengers as in vehicle crash simulation, or does not intrude into the passenger cabin area etc. In such simulations, the safety can be studied in these domain rather than comparing the stresses.

As mentioned above no universal rules can be given for Factor of Safety and it depends on the various circumstances and type of analysis.
